Should you wake your child to change the baby's diaper?

Your baby will probably tell you when their diaper needs to be changed. But when they are very small, they have not learned to express this need yet. Their sleep pattern has also not become normal yet. Remember that children can get burns or redness if their diaper is not changed for a long time. Other problems are eczema or infections. The most important thing is to pay attention as all babies are different.

For newborns

If you have a newborn, it is necessary to change often. Their stomachs are very small and their digestive system is still developing. Therefore, their digestive system works slowly but eliminates quickly.

On the other hand, they are fed on average at two or three hour intervals. Generally, they will eat a few times a day and about three times a night.

As a result, it is  important to pay attention after they have eaten. Newborns will often need to get the change made immediately after. It is also a good idea to pat them on the back after.

Similarly,  cold can cause them to urinate more often. Remember that urine is fluid that comes in a different temperature. It will also require you to change the baby’s diaper. However, do not be surprised if they start peeing while changing them.

If they are older

As your baby grows, you can change your baby’s diaper less often. But they will produce more urine and feel discomfort with a wet diaper.

They may start crying, as a defense mechanism to express their discomfort. It is important to  recognize when their crying is a sign that the diaper needs to be changed.

In general, children begin to defecate easily when they begin to crawl. Leg movements facilitate  digestion.

This means that they will need diaper changes more often during the day. However,  some children need at least one diaper change at night,  depending on their eating habits.

Are you going to change your baby’s diaper while they sleep at night?

You should be aware of when their diaper needs to be changed at any age, whether it is day or night. But each stage has certain needs.

  • Newborns need constant diaper changes, but their sleep is irregular. Waking them up to change their diapers during the day will shape their sleep habits. It can create bad patterns. But if we do it right, we will help them get good sleep habits.
  • As children grow,  we will contribute to their hygiene habits. They will start noticing when they need a diaper change.
  • This will be a future tool to train them  and help them manage their urge.

Baby’s sleep and diaper change

Many babies take long naps during the day but cannot sleep at night  or wake up often. Every child is different. This happens when your baby does not have an established sleep routine, and gets confused by their sleep.

To avoid a drastic change in their schedule  , we recommend helping them get used to sunlight during the day.

If they need a diaper change while relaxing during the day, we can take advantage of this by waking them up with some music. Alternatively, we could give them a hot bath or feed them.
